Froneberger Fires Shutout Versus Mississippi Valley
May 5, 2007
Alabama State split a doubleheader with Mississippi Valley State on Saturday. Hours before, Hornets' catcher Furquan Shamsud-Din was graduating with a math degree. Still, he was able to get to Paterson Field to catch a tremendous game from his battery mate Josh Froneberger.
ASU 2, MVSU 0 Josh Froneberger has been Alabama State's best pitcher over the last three seasons. On Saturday, he was at his absolute best as he threw a five-shutout in a 2-0 ASU win against Mississippi Valley State. Froneberger struck out six Delta Devils, raising his SWAC-leading total to 81 for the season. J. T. Stovall (4-5) did his best to match Froneberger as he held the Hornets scoreless through the first three innings. However, the Hornets got on the board in the fourth. Selmon Pearson doubled off the outfield wall and later scored when Mississippi Valley misplayed a hard grounder off Zeb Hilburn's bat. Larry Watkins Jr. drove home Hilburn with a double down the left field line to give ASU a 2-0 lead. That's all Froneberger (5-4) would need as he only allowed one runner to move past first base in the last the innings. Pearson had two hits on the day to lead the Hornets. MVSU 10, ASU 3 Mississippi Valley State won game two of Staturday's doubleheader 10-3. Joel Stafford (2-0) was sharp as he scattered five Hornets' hits and held ASU scoreless in four innings of work. Shawn Bard had two RBI on two hits, including a home run for the Delta Devils. Will Johnson and Selmon Pearson each had two hits for ASU. Marquis Blake (2-4) took the loss for the Hornets. |
