ASU's Tiffany Wells Named SWAC Newcomer of the Year

April 30, 2008

Birmingham, Ala. - Alabama State's Tiffany Wells has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year.

"Tiffany was very consistent for us all season," said ASU head softball coach Telma O'Neal-Hall. "She did a great job adjusting to the competition at the Division I level. We expect even more from Tiffany next season.

Wells, a junior from Douglas, Georgia, led ASU with a .347 batting average. She also topped the Lady Hornets with 19 runs and 35 hits. Wells was successful on 10 of 14 stolen base attempts.

ASU pitcher Destinee Sanchez, a sophomore from Colton, California, was also honored by the SWAC when she was named 2nd team All-SWAC. Sanchez had a strong 4.23 earned run average - the 9th best in the league. She struck out 78 batters, good enough for seventh in the conference.

Sanchez fought through injury to be one of the most durable and dependable hurlers in the SWAC. She was fifth in the conference in both innings pitched (150) and appearances (26).
